Do Universities Provide Students with Enough Opportunities to be Creative?

Creativity is defined as the use of basic ideas to think of a way of creating something new or extraordinary. Therefore creativity is not a skill that can be taught by carrying out specific techniques. Instead, it is one’s ability to use their senses to see and make something extraordinary out of the ordinary. In higher learning education levels, students are told to work hard to get good grades. They are equipped with the knowledge on how to do that. The learning is directed in a certain way that has to be followed in order to achieve these grades. Failure to which, one loses points that lead to their general reduction of grades.

For creative programs to be implemented in higher learning institutions effectively, it should be integrated with other learning programs undertaken by children at a tender age. This can be done by allowing children to decide the colors they love, the sport they would like to play, and where they would like to watch their favorite shows. This will help them develop self-confidence and the ability to think for themselves and new ways of coming up with new ideas. Creativity becomes an essential asset in the learning process as it will equip the student with both knowledgeable and creative ways of solving problems.

Problems Faced with the Incorporation of Creativity in Universities

Most higher learning institutions do not view creativity as a significant aspect that needs to be included in the student’s educational curriculum. On the other hand, analytical ways of solving problems have dominated the creative practices of problem-solving that exists. Although there may seem to be creative and design courses that should provide a platform for students to come up with innovative ways, it may not be like so. This is because the students are still expected to follow the guidelines put in place that limit their ability to think outside the box.

Most teachers have the academic knowledge to teach their scholars but lack proper methods of combining this knowledge with creativity. Their lack of creativity also affects their student’s ability to come up with new ways of solving problems. This inhibits its importance to be expressed and felt among the students. Most professors complain that there isn’t much time for preparation for a basic lecture lesson. Students’ reluctant characteristics, such as laziness, shyness, and signs of fatigue and lack of interest, also contribute to the inability to promote creativity in their modes of teaching. The implementation of creative programs in higher learning institutions often seen to appear as a prevalent problem. This is because it seems to be challenging to make adjustments that suit both interested parties; that is, the learner and the tutor.
